Censuses and registers on family farming in Argentina: efforts for its quantification

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the debates about family farming in Argentina during the last years, particularly the need to quantify and characterize the sector. The interest in conceptualization can be found in the academic, technical and politic fields. The article tries to show the spatial heterogeneity and diversity of actors of family farming. Therefore, it includes a brief comparison between the richest region of Argentina (The Pampas) and one of the poorest regions (Northwest). In relation to this, the results of the RENAF (national registry of family farming) in the province of Santiago del Estero are used to characterize the sector and present certain methodological lines aimed at a better conceptualization.

Raúl Paz
Raúl Paz es Doctor en Ciencias Agrarias. Actualmente es Investigador del CONICET (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Técnica), Docente de la Universidad Nacional de Santiago del Estero (UNSE). Es coordinador del Equipo de Investigación de Sociología Rural, el cual tiene como lugar de trabajo el INDES-UNSE (Instituto de Estudios Sociales para el Desarrollo Social).
Cristian Emanuel Jara
Cristian Jara es Doctor en Humanidades y becario del CONICET (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Técnica). Magister en Estudios Sociales para América Latina. Su línea de investigación consiste en movimientos campesinos y conflictos por recursos naturales. Forma parte del Equipo de Investigación de Sociología Rural, el cual tiene como lugar de trabajo el INDES-UNSE (Instituto de Estudios Sociales para el Desarrollo Social).
