Regalos, vigilancia y comunidades imaginadas fallidas: ayuda cristiana global y desigualdad en el patrocinio de niños en los Andes ecuatorianos

Resumen

Este ensayo analiza la manera en la cual una organización para el desarrollo indígena, que trabaja con una agencia internacional evangélica donante, participa en un ‘gobierno de poblaciones’ a través del sistema de patrocinio de niños. Por un lado, la organización indígena está sujeta a la verticalidad jerárquica de la agencia, a través del proceso de legibilidad y rendición de cuentas llevado a cabo para asegurar el correcto funcionamiento del sistema de patrocinio. Por otro lado, la organización indígena vigila a ciertos sectores de la población y controla a los niños y a sus familias. Además, se explica cómo las prácticas relacionadas al patrocinio de niños –tales como los regalos que mandan los padrinos y la correspondencia entre padrinos y niños– son intentos por construir conexiones personales dentro de una comunidad cristiana que trasciende fronteras geográficas, económicas y sociales; sin embargo, éstas prácticas terminan incrementando la desigualdad, especialmente a nivel local.
